The 'Move The Mountain' appeal

The Scargill Movement has a mountain to move. This is the debt we owe to Lee Abbey and others, who made interest-free loans to us totalling £1.05 million to enable the purchase of Scargill House and its estate in 2009. The next repayment is due by 31 March 2012, and this presents a massive challenge. But the future of the Scargill Movement depends upon it.

Our strategy

We plan to move the mountain one spadeful at a time, and are asking supporters and well-wishers if they will offer either substantial one-off gifts (from those who have a JCB rather than a spade) or standing-order pledges over five years of between £6 and £55 a month (depending on the size of your shovel). If every Scargill supporter responds prayerfully and generously, we will be able to repay the Lee Abbey loan. We will then begin raising funds to cover the developments planned over the coming years. We will gradually reach the point where Scargill earns its keep and doesn't need to rely on charitable giving for its day-to-day running costs.

“For 50 years, Scargill has been an immensely valuable and valued resource to the church, especially in the North of England. It has been a place of refreshment and renewal for countless people seeking to follow the Way of Jesus Christ.

By an amazing chain of events stemming from faith, vision and determination, and backed by the prayers and gifts of many well-wishers, the new Scargill Movement has been born.

I am delighted to see Scargill reborn and reinvigorated. There is still much to be done. Repairing and upgrading the buildings and improving the facilities, especially for young people, is vital. Bursary funding is needed for those who could not otherwise afford to come.

Please help in any way you can, and as generously as you are able. I warmly commend this appeal and pray for its success.”
