Project Director - Simon Browning

My first experience of community life was at the age of three, when my father became Warden of Whalley Abbey. Since then I have lived in Oxford, Sussex, London, and Ireland before settling in Yorkshire where I’ve now spent over half my life.

I am an engineer by training, and enjoy using my technical and analytical skills to understand and engage with various practical and technological challenges. Most of my career has been spent as a Company Director, both in the private and public sectors, and I have a particular interest in strategy and marketing. I formalised my management skills by gaining an MBA in 2003.

My two children are now grown-up – my son lives in Canada, and my daughter is studying at Manchester University. 31st July 2009 sees my marriage to Caren Taylor who joins me living on site at Scargill House.

I share with Caren a love of the outdoors, including hill walking, canoeing and sailing. We both believe that remarkable things happen when people are in ‘thin places’ and extend the limits of their comfort zones.

Although only connected with Scargill for a short time, Caren and I feel a strong sense that it is a very special place, and we are eager to contribute as much as we can to making Scargill an effective centre for hospitality, service, teaching and healing for the next 50 years.
