Council meeting notes July 7th
Council Meeting July 7th
The prayer at the beginning of the meeting reflected on Hospitality as described by Henri Nouwen – providing a place of freedom for the other, some verses from Psalm 33 were used.

Susie Mapledoram, Youth Officer for the Manchester Diocese, was welcomed to Council, and introduced herself, her particular area of expertise being work with children and young people.
Time was taken to reflect on and give thanks for June 20th celebrations and all they represented, sharing some of the communications that had followed, and planning for an event in September.

Simon Browning’s first full report to Council was well received, much begun, much to do! It is seen as important that Simon is not bogged down with maintenance details, steps are being taken to set up a fully effective working office, and Pauline Thompson was formally welcomed as Volunteer Coordinator – work will take place on organising volunteers, their contribution seen as something special to Scargill House.

A draft business analysis previously circulated was discussed – bearing in mind that business is not all we are about, but that we need to be businesslike, with a sustainable means of supporting the ministry. As the next planned Council meeting is not until September, interim subgroup meetings were organised to take forward business planning, appointment of architect.

Bruce Duncan (Fund Raising/Appeals adviser to the Council) spoke to a previously circulated design outline for material for an Appeal. The business plan is needed to inform the appeal material, so work will progress with both in the next month or two.

Important decisions on size and organisation of the new Community were touched on and are to be worked on over the next weeks. 5 Council members were chosen to work on appointing the first Community Director, advertisement in August with a view to interviews in September.

A design brief was discussed, with awareness that a 'house style' including a logo needs to be adopted for the appeal, and that design of such is normally a lengthy process. A brief for will be produced and circulated. Advice is being sought, in the hope of short-circuiting the full process, without cutting corners which will later be regretted. It was agreed that anything adopted at this stage would be for the Appeal and launch stage, and could be altered when the house opens fully.
