Physical, outdoor, creative activities
Surrounded by the rugged splendour of the Yorkshire Dales, no one at Scargill wants to stay inside for too long! From bushcraft to climbing, photography to walking, there are so many ways to enjoy the outdoors.
Outdoor adventures
In our programme we have walking holidays for all levels of fitness, and events exploring local landmarks such as castles, abbeys and railways. At certain times of year it's possible to camp here, and occasionally you can even forego the tent and learn some bushcraft!
On or near our site, there are opportunities for adventurous groups to take part in archery, abseiling, caving, canoeing, cycling and climbing. We can put you in touch with local operators.
If you like horses, our friends at the Kilnsey Trekking and Riding Centre, just a couple of miles down the road, offer pony-trekking and horse-riding lessons for groups or individuals. Their riding and tuition are suitable for adults and children from the age of 4; able and disabled people; beginners, intermediate and advanced riders.
All these activities are subject to availability and need to be arranged in advance of your visit.
Getting creative
There's something about being surrounded by so much beauty that inspires creativity. Look through our programme for holidays and retreats that include:
- Photography
- Painting
- Music-making and singing
- Music in worship
- Story-telling
- Prayer labyrinths
Summerfest is a particularly creative time, with many visiting artists, concerts and workshops of all kinds.
We also work in partnership with CARM (Creative Arts Retreat Movement).
Whether or not you're joining us for one of our creative events, make sure you bring your camera, sketchbook, musical instruments – whatever you need to express yourself! Our art room is available for guests to use, and community members will be happy to assist and encourage your creative endeavours.
